Dual study programmes are booming in Germany. According to a recent study conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in 2022, the study model has developed significantly over the past ten years, with the number of dual study programmes even doubling. A dynamic development that also takes into account the changes in the current labour market. Securing skilled labour, flexibility in education and vocational training and recruiting young talent are just some of the buzzwords that companies are confronted with today.
The training-integrated dual study programme combines theory with practice, as a recognised vocational qualification is obtained at the same time as a university degree. The dual study programme at the University of Magdeburg is currently available at the Faculty of Computer Science and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. "The dual study programme is perfect for anyone who wants to combine theory and practice," says Katrin Burgmann from the University of Magdeburg. She works in the Economics department and is the contact person for the dual study programme partners at the University of Magdeburg.
Apply now for a dual study program
Pupils who are interested in a dual study programme at the University of Magdeburg should apply now, as the deadlines and application process differ from a non-dual study programme. Future students must first contact the company of their choice and conclude a training contract. "We have been working with interesting cooperation partners for years, who regularly advertise vacancies for dual study programmes. Interested parties can find an overview of all Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg ration companies on our website," says Katrin Burgmann. The university also provides support in the search for a suitable company for dual training. "My recommendation: Interested parties should apply to a large number of companies and find out which one suits you in a personal interview." As a rule, the application period for a dual study programme at most companies begins in January.
The dual study programme is demanding and is divided into training periods at the company during the lecture-free period and study periods at the university. "After the second year of study, the dual study programme students change their place of training for a year and work full-time at the company. This is an exciting time in which the theoretical knowledge learnt can also be applied in practice."
The great advantage of a dual study programme is that graduates gain both a vocational qualification and a university degree. For companies looking for skilled workers, it therefore offers one more opportunity to attract well-trained junior staff at an early stage and retain them in the long term. On average, 85 per cent of dual students are taken on after completing their studies and training.
