Studying with a laser cutter and a 3D printer

Anyone considering studying at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg might initially picture lecture theatres, libraries and a lot of theory. But studying at the University of Magdeburg also involves practical work and even getting your hands dirty. But what do you do if a component is missing for a university project, a prototype needs to be built, or an idea finally needs to be brought to life? In the ‘Studi-LAB’ student workshop at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, students find exactly the support they need for this.

The Studi-LAB is not limited to specific degree programmes. “In principle, the Studi-LAB is available to all students and staff at the University of Magdeburg,” explains Dr Martin Beutner. He has been leading the project for a year and, together with his colleague Dirk Rudolph, supports students in bringing their projects to life. “Here, you can bring to life things related to the university setting, such as student projects, dissertations, internships or research work. If you need something that can’t be done in your own workshop or elsewhere, we’re here to help.”

Learning aids or practical models can also be created in the Studi-LAB. Purely private projects, such as furniture for one’s own home, are, however, only possible to a limited extent. “If everyone really wanted to do that, the whole thing would get out of hand,” says Dr Martin Beutner with a smile. “We can still discuss smaller requests, though.”

As early as 2016, a preliminary course run by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering gave rise to the idea of a student workshop. This preliminary course allowed prospective students to gain initial insights into mathematics, mechanics, mechanical engineering and practical work even before they began their studies. It became clear that many students did not just want to work theoretically, but also wanted to build things themselves, experiment and get their hands dirty. This need led to the plan to create a place where exactly that is possible. However, implementation was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Finally, in 2022, the rooms in the connecting building between Test Halls 11.1 and 11.2 on campus were prepared. In October 2023, the student workshop was officially opened at this location and has been in active use ever since.

In addition to conventional hand tools, students at the Studi-Lab also have access to specialist equipment and materials. “We mainly use 3D printing here, and we’re relatively well equipped for that,” explains Dr Martin Beutner. “The laser cutter is also used extensively. In addition, there is a wide range of tools for metal and woodworking: from workbenches and cordless screwdrivers to saws and drills, right through to grinders and a small soldering station – there’s plenty on offer. I think this is a good basic set-up for everything you need to bring an idea to life,” says the head of the Studi-LAB.

The student workshop is funded entirely by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FMB). The tools and a wide selection of materials are available to students free of charge.

In the case of very specific requirements, such as special filaments for 3D printing or specific screws, materials sometimes need to be brought in by the students themselves or organised individually. Even then, however, the Studi-LAB tries to find a solution. “We’re always the ‘good enablers’,” says Dr Martin Beutner, describing the workshop’s role. “I always call it ‘helping people to help themselves’.”

The workshop is also used in various courses and projects. This gives rise to a variety of practical work: from technical designs and prototypes to creative solutions for specific tasks. In the so-called ‘Egg Challenge’, for example, FMB students must transport an egg automatically over a distance and across an obstacle.

Larger and interdisciplinary projects have also been supported at the Studi-LAB. “A good example of this is a pinball table that was created for the teacher training programme in Building 40 and used at the didacta education fair,” recalls Dr Martin Beutner. “This involved technical and educational perspectives working together.”

Other projects have included seating, a bridge, a bicycle rack and various 3D-printed objects. For the head of the Studi-LAB, however, one thing is clear: “For everyone, their own project is always a bit of a highlight.”

Anyone wishing to work in the Studi-LAB isn’t simply handed a tool. For machines and equipment, an induction is provided first. Especially when students work in the workshop more frequently, they are guided step by step through their use. Initially, work is carried out together; later, after receiving the appropriate training, students can also work more independently. Safety and health and safety play an important role in this. Safety goggles, ear protection and other safety equipment are provided. “We naturally work in accordance with the university’s health and safety regulations,” says the head of Studi-LAB. “During the initial stages, particular attention is paid to ensuring that machines are used correctly and safety measures are observed.”

Dr Martin Beutner has a clear vision for the future. “In the long term, students should not only work on projects themselves, but also instruct and support other students,” he explains. “Experienced students can then mentor newer students. But that is really still a long-term goal.”

In addition to individual arrangements, this summer term also sees the introduction of open access hours for the first time: every Tuesday from 3 pm to 6 pm, students can drop in without registration. Furthermore, the team is available on site during the day. “Getting in touch is straightforward via email. Students can describe their idea, and then we discuss what is possible, what materials are needed and how the project can be implemented,” concludes the head of the Studi-LAB.
